Mets Scared off from Potential Trade by Price Tag, Tulo's Contract

It's not as if the Mets' chances of landing Tulowitzki seemed all that high to begin with; a multitude of factors stand in the way. Newsday's David Lennon and Marc Carig reported two such factors may be driving New York away from its pursuit of the 30-year-old:
After inquiring about Tulowitzki during the offseason, the Mets checked in again recently, according to a source, and came away thinking that a deal still is unrealistic. Not only is his salary prohibitive -- he's due a guaranteed $110 million through 2020 -- but the Rockies would want a ransom in prospects to deal their franchise player.
Beyond Tulowitzki, a source said, the Mets do not plan to pursue other options to upgrade the shortstop position.
Not only does Tulowitzki carry a massive contract, he also has never played a full season in his previous nine years in MLB. Only twice did he eclipse the 150-game plateau during that stretch.
You can understand why paying $100-plus million to a shortstop who'll turn 31 in October might scare off the Mets.
Plus, it's not as if Tulowitzki is publicly angling for a trade, thus weakening the Rockies' bargaining position. Earlier in the week, he reaffirmed his desire to remain in Denver.
"I didn't sign my contract because I wanted to be somewhere else," Tulowitzki said Wednesday, per MLB.com's Tracy Ringolsby. "I signed my contract because I want to be with the Rockies."
Perhaps he'd be enticed by playing for a genuine World Series contender, but it doesn't appear the Mets will be that contender.
